Coming Distractions

Earlier than usual, Kirkus Reviews has posted its annual Mysteries & Thrillers special, which highlights the new books its editors and writers (including Clayton Moore) most look forward to reading in 2009. There are a few interesting titles here that I hadn’t heard about previously: Thomas H. Cook’s The Fate of Katherine Carr (due out in June), Gillian Flynn’s Dark Places (May), Denis Johnson’s Nobody Move (May), and Ian Pears’ Stone’s Fall (May). And Hard Case Crime publisher Charles Ardai must also be happy to see a sidebar celebrating his small company’s efforts to further the cause of paperback pulp fiction.

Thanks for the nod. To give fair credit, I ended up talking to Walter Mosley again about his terrific new series (and put it on the list for the Kirkus Special) because I had seen it featured on The Rap Sheet a while back.

Charles says he's pleased. Kirkus doesn't normally review paperbacks, which puts Hard Case into an unexpected black hole as far as coverage, so it was nice to create an opportunity to show more people what HCC is all about.

You can see more with Charlie Huston talking about Mystic Arts at my new column this month, too: http://www.bookslut.com/mystery_strumpet/2009_02_014025.php
