Pierce’s Picks

A weekly alert for followers of crime, mystery, and thriller fiction.

The Ways of the World, by Robert Goddard (Mysterious Press). This opening entry in a trilogy of thrillers set at the end of World War I finds ex-flying ace James “Max” Maxted trying to figure out who murdered his British diplomat father in Paris. (In case you’re wondering, this novel appeared in the UK in 2013; the prolific Goddard already awaits the early July release, in Britain, of his third book in this set, The Ends of the Earth.) Time of Death, by Mark Billingham (Atlantic Monthly Press), is the 13th book starring London police inspector Tom Thorne. Here, Thorne’s girlfriend, Detective Sergeant Helen Weeks, lends her support to an old school chum--the wife of the suspect in a kidnap and murder case--while Thorne tries to prove police have been misled in that investigation.
