Five of a Kind

• Curt Purcell from The Groovy Age of Horror samples author Peter O’Donnell’s initial pair of Modesty Blaise books, and discovers--quite to his astonishment--that “there’s nothing light or zany or confectionary about these first two novels. In fact, they take some aggressively ruthless, gritty turns in places. O’Donnell does a pretty convincing job of showing how Modesty and other characters manage their emotions through any number of harrowing, horrible situations.” Read more here.

• This is for my friend Charlie Smyth: a chronological compilation of every expletive ever uttered on The Sopranos. Not surprisingly, the video is amazingly long.

• In his Main Title Sequence blog, Lee Goldberg has posted the ending credits for the 1973-1978 TV anthology series Police Story. I don’t see the complementary opener anywhere on YouTube, but I do spot the preview for the Police Story pilot film, which starred Vic Morrow. It’s a crime that this Joseph Wambaugh-created NBC series hasn’t made it to DVD yet, when so much crap is already for sale.

• The Noir of the Week site’s latest cinema treasure: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956).

• And Jake and the Fatman fans take note: The second season of that William Conrad/Joe Penny series--which moved the action from Los Angeles to Hawaii (to take advantage of leftover Magnum, P.I. sets) is scheduled for release on May 5.

Whoever put together that Sopranos mash has WAY too much time on his (or her, but probably his) hands.
