Well, this seems like adequate compensation. While my friend and colleague Richard Morgan was nominated for, but did not win a Gumshoe Award this year for his incredible future noir novel Black Man (retitled Thirteen in the States), that same book has now picked up the 2008 Arthur C Clarke Award.
The shortlist of competitors for this commendation was a tough one, indeed. In addition to Morgan’s novel, it featured The Red Men, by Matthew de Abaitua (Snowbooks); The H-Bomb Girl, by Stephen Baxter (Faber and Faber); The Carhullan Army, by Sarah Hall (Faber and Faber); The Raw Shark Texts, by Steven Hall (Canongate); and The Execution Channel, by Ken MacLeod (Orbit).
An announcement of Morgan’s win was made yesterday, April 30, during an awards ceremony held on the opening night of the Sci-Fi-London Film Festival.
