I somehow failed to notice this news before, but Mystery News has reminded me of it: Committee members for the New England Crime Bake, an annual conference of writers and readers, are sponsoring the third short crime fiction contest in memory of Al Blanchard, who was co-chair of the first three New England Crime Bake conferences. The prize will be $100 plus publication in Level Best Books’ fifth anthology of short crime fiction. “The story must be a crime story by a New England author OR with a New England setting,” reports Mystery News. “The winner will be a guest of the Crime Bake Committee at the New England Crime Bake”--to be held November 9-11, 2007--“where the award will be presented in person. The deadline for submissions is April 30, 2007.”
Submissions must not exceed 5,000 words in length, and “may include the following genres: mystery, thriller, suspense, caper, and horror.” But, the Crime Bake site warns: “No torture/killing of children or animals.” (Sheesh! Americans have become so darn squeamish nowadays.)
