Speaking of Magnum, P.I. ... Last summer, I reported on rumors that the habitually wooden actor Ben Affleck was being considered for the title role in a big-screen version of that 1980-1988 CBS-TV series--a proposal that didn’t sit well with some of that series’ die-hard fans. (Talk of George Clooney or Vince Vaughn playing Hawaii’s coolest gumshoe were greeted with disdain, as well.) Now, both Cinematical and its sister blog, TV Squad, have follow-up squibs suggesting that this plum role might go, instead, to Matthew McConaughey (The Wedding Planner, Failure to Launch, etc.). “Other actors supposedly involved with this ‘on again, off again’ project,” TV Squad says, “include Steve Zahn as Rick, Tyrese Gibson as T.C. and William H. Macy as Higgins.”
And in the interests of modernizing the character, it seems Thomas Magnum is going to be an Iraq war veteran in the movie, rather than a Vietnam vet. Maybe, if this project doesn’t work out, producers can excuse themselves by claiming that Magnum has been called back for extended duty in George W. Bush’s disastrous Mideast conflict.
