South West Crime Wave

It appears that the final touches are being sorted for CrimeFest 2008, to be held in Bristol, England, from June 5 to 8. I received an e-mail message from thriller writer Charles Cumming, saying how much he’d enjoyed his victory in our recent chess battle, and that he’d be packing a chessboard along to Bristol. He wanted to make sure I’d be there, too.

Coincidentally, the organizers of CrimeFest, Myles Allfrey and Adrian Muller, just e-mailed me with their update of this year’s events, including the final panel details:
Since we last contacted you, Lee Child, due to circumstances beyond his and our control, has had to withdraw from participating in CRIMEFEST. Both Lee and the CRIMEFEST organisers are disappointed by this development but we look forward to seeing him at a future CRIMEFEST. And, Lee, congratulations on being number 1 in both the UK paperback and hardback best-seller lists!

Graciously stepping in as Lee’s replacement is Jeff Lindsay, author of the hugely popular Dexter thrillers currently being televised across the globe. We could not be more delighted at Jeff’s joining Karin Fossum and Ian Rankin as Featured Guest Authors! Other authors have also signed up since the last update; to find out who, go to the ATTENDING AUTHORS page.

We are pleased to announce that a draft PROGRAMME is now available on the CRIMEFEST website. All the moderators and participating authors have been contacted with their panel details.
It looks as though I shall be moderating a panel of debut writers, while friend Cumming will participate in another panel, that one to be moderated by Shots editor Mike Stotter and having to do with a subject close to my heart, “How to Write a Thriller.” I’m also pleased to hear that Jeff Lindsay will be over to the UK, as it will give me a chance to update the last chat I had with this creator of serial killer and blood pattern analyst Dexter Morgan.

Allfrey and Muller are great organizers and devoted fans of this genre, so I would suggest you swing by culture-rich Bristol this June, if you can. For a report on the last convention those two organized, Left Coast Crime 2006, click here.
