British critic-raconteur Mike Ripley, who announced earlier this year that he is retiring his long-running Shots column, “Getting Away with Murder,” recently posted his penultimate compilation of crime-fiction news, nostalgia, and books commentary.
Included in the mix: his look back at what may have been the first GAWM appearance, in the summer 1999 issue of Sherlock Magazine; recollections of James Coburn’s Derek Flint spy flicks; and recommendations of new or recent novels by Graham Hurley, Peter Hanington, Yulia Yakovleva, Ann Granger, and others. Oh, and surely as no more than a public service, Ripley mentions that he has a new novel starring Margery Allingham’s Golden Age detective, Albert Campion, due out from Severn House in September.
