The review of Joe Ide’s Philip Marlowe pastiche begins with the reviewer telling us that he has never read any Raymond Chandler.
Is it just me, or doesn’t that basically demolish 90% of the review’s value right there?
Normally, I would agree with your assessment, Peter. But as author Joe Ide told The San Diego Union-Tribune, "I almost had to write the book for people who didn’t know Philip Marlowe." (https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/entertainment/books/story/2022-02-06/joe-ide-revives-a-legend-in-the-goodbye-coast) Therefore, that reviewer for the blog Civilian Reader represents his target audience.
Cheers,
Jeff
