In the 1950s my mom and I always watched American Bandstand when I got home from school. We knew the kids' names, who was going out with whom, and had our favorite dancers. Dick Clark had an infectious optimism that I loved, even after his stroke. One of my favorite all-time TV people.

Growing up in Philly in the sixties, he was a big deal in my life. Watched the show for hours after school when I was 11-14. He was not supposed to be very nice to the kids once the camera was off him from what I heard.
