The Wolfe Pack and Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine are soliciting nominees for the fourth annual Black Orchid Novella Award. According to a news release, all submissions must “emphasize the deductive skills of the sleuth,” “contain no overt sex or violence,” “and not include characters from the original [Nero Wolfe] series.”
The first-prize winner will receive $1,000 and see his or her work published in AHMM. “Entries must be 15,000 to 20,000 words in length,” this same release explains, “and must be postmarked by May 31, 2010.” A winner will be announced next December during the Wolfe Pack’s Annual Black Orchid Banquet in New York City.

But there is plenty of sex and violence in the Wolfe novels. The sex is mostly between the lines, admittedly, but some tough violence pops up on stage fairly often -- GOLDEN SPIDERS, IN THE BEST FAMILIES and THE BLACK MOUNTAIN particularly come to mind.
Sometimes I see a disconnect between Stout's devotees and the books themselves.
