So Long, Sam

There’s no mystery-fiction connection, but the news that Sam Maloof, the designer and maker of the world’s finest furniture--such as the gorgeous rocking chair shown here--died a couple of days ago at age 93 still deserves mentioning. I met Maloof when I went out to his splendid home and workshop in Pomona, California, to do a story. This was after he’d won a MacArthur “Genius Award” in 1985. We became friends. Sam, I’m so sorry now that I didn’t take you up on your generous offer of a beautiful music stand for a few hundred bucks. They are worth a fortune these days.
