From December 5 to 7, the Wolves will gather in a pack once again. The Nero Wolfe Society’s Wolfe Pack, that is, members of which will get together for the 31st annual Black Orchid Banquet as well as the presentation of this year’s Nero Award for Best American Mystery.
Fans of Rex Stout’s Nero Wolfe from throughout North America are expected to converge on New York City. Events will include a Friday evening buffet dinner and discussion of Stout’s 1953 novel, The Golden Spiders, at Pete’s Tavern; a Saturday afternoon assembly with guest speakers; and a pre-banquet cocktail party followed by the dinner itself, which will feature foods that--appropriately enough--are based on recipes inspired by The Nero Wolfe Cookbook. The Nero Award “for excellence in the mystery genre” will be handed out during the banquet.
You can find the shortlist of this year’s Nero Award nominees here. The official Wolfe Pack Web site--including more information on the December events--is here. And keep your eyes peeled for the Pack in 2009. According to its Web site, planned events include a Stout/Wolfe research expedition to Boston College.
