Getting “Nowhere” Fast

Just a couple of weeks after author Tony Hillerman’s demise, the national crime-fiction award named in his honor has been given to Kansas City, Missouri, author Ron Chaney for his unpublished novel, The Ragged End of Nowhere. The winner of this Tony Hillerman Prize was announced during the fifth annual Tony Hillerman Writers Conference: Focus on Mystery held in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

According to a press release, “The Ragged End of Nowhere tells the story of a CIA agent who must return home to Las Vegas to solve the murder of his younger brother. The author, Roy Chaney holds a graduate degree in literature from California State University. He has worked as a military journalist, photographer, editor, and as an investigator for the federal government.”

The Hillerman Prize is sponsored by both the conference and Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin’s Minotaur, and brings with it a publishing deal. Chaney’s The Ragged Edge of Nowhere is scheduled to be released by Minotaur Books in the fall of 2009.

The previous Hillerman Prize winner, The Replacement Child, by Christine Barber, was published earlier this fall in hardcover.
