The Devil’s Due

Last summer I took my family to England’s Harrogate Crime Festival, and the experience left a big impression on my teenage son, Alexander. Alex met up with a number of authors and publishing colleagues of mine, spurring him to read more books--which is not a bad thing. Currently his favorite authors are Lee Child, Harlan Coben, and James Bond creator Ian Fleming.

If I do say so myself, Alex is a rather talented young musician (who plays under the pseudonym The Kariminal). He recently noticed that, in association with the May release of Sebastian Faulks’ new Bond novel, Devil May Care, there’s a James Bond competition being sponsored by MySpace and Penguin Books. The task is to compose an original James Bond signature tune. The winning entry will be recorded as the official theme tune to be used with the release of the Penguin audiobook edition of Devil May Care on May 28.

If you want proof that my long-standing fondness for Fleming has been projected onto my only son, just click here to listen to Kariminal’s entry in this Devil May Care audiobook competition. Also available on that page are some of Alex’s other compositions. Let me know how you think young Kariminal’s composition stacks up against composer John Barry’s iconic Bond movie theme.
