It seems only natural that, when Aussie writer Daniel Hatadi got around to organizing a fiction-writing contest at the social-networking site Crimespace, he should choose “Australia” as the theme for entries. “How you include it is up to you,” Hatadi explains in laying out the rules for this debut competition. “Your story could be set in Australia, have an Australian character in it, or simply mention Australia somewhere in the story. Hell, even including an Aussie cultural icon such as Vegemite will do.”
Entries to Crimespace’s contest must run no more than 2,500 words in length (“including the title”) and have to be submitted to crimespace@gmail.com by January 31, 2008. The winner, Hatadi says, will receive a “$50 Amazon voucher, Crimespace T-shirt or store item, and a pack of three signed crime fiction books by Australian authors in a Crimespace tote bag.” The top three picks will be announced in Crimespace on March 31 of next year.
