The Portland, Oregon-based group Friends of Mystery has announced the recipients of its 2007 Spotted Owl Awards. Last year’s Days of Rage, the fifth P.I. Smokey Dalton novel by Kris Nelscott (aka Kristine Kathryn Rusch), has been acclaimed the Best Mystery by a Pacific Northwest Writer. (This is Nelscott’s second Spotted Owl win. Her 2004 Dalton novel, Stone Cribs, picked up the same prize.) Meanwhile, Mike Doogan, a former Anchorage newspaper columnist and current Democratic member of the Alaska House of Representatives, has been chosen to receive the Best First Novel award for Lost Angel, which introduced ex-cop and ex-con Nik Kane.
