Gerald So alerts me to the fact that April Fool’s Day is also the ninth birthday of The Thrilling Detective Web Site, Kevin Burton Smith’s immense online database of information about fictional sleuths and their authors. Thrilling Detective is an essential tool for somebody like me, but it also provides marvelous opportunities for browsers to discover characters they’ve never encountered before, TV shows they never saw, novelists deserving of their attention, and new crime fiction (edited by the aforementioned Mr. So) to entertain them in the wee hours, when lovers have gone and jobs don’t yet beckon. Smith, a contributing editor of January Magazine and a too-occasional contributor to The Rap Sheet, should be damn proud of the resource he’s created.
