Who in the heck remembers that famed British spy novelist Eric Ambler (The Mask of Dimitrios, Epitaph for a Spy) created a 1960-1962 private-eye series for American television titled Checkmate? Ivan G. Shreve Jr. from Thrilling Days of Yesteryear, that’s who. And he notes on the site that Ambler abandoned the project soon after actor Doug McClure (later to star in The Virginian and Barbary Coast) was cast as the third necessary member of a San Francisco detective agency.
