Stepping Out with “Gumshoe”

The December 2006 issue of Gumshoe: A Literary Investigation is now online with new reviews of books by Madelyn Alt, Jeffrey Anderson, Robert Fate, Steve Hamilton, Charlaine Harris, Stuart McBride, Emilie Richards, Theresa Schwegel, Duane Swierczynski, and others. Editor Gayle Surrette announces the addition of a news column, and senior editor Ernest Lilley contemplates spy novels as a subgenre of the police procedural, through the lens of our man of the moment, James Bond:
Clearly the evil mastermind wasn’t an authority or lucky, and “stupid” seems to overstate the difference between himself and our man from MI6 ... but he did get one thing right. Bond is, at heart, a cop. All secret agents are. They work deep undercover and their accountability (at least to the public) is pretty murky, but as Halle Berry points out as Jinx in her role as the Bond girl/American Agent in Die Another Day, they’re all out for the same things: “World peace, unconditional love, and our little friend with the expensive acne.”

Dear Linda,

Nice of you to notice, and a nice little writeup too. It's hard to believe, but this is our seventh issue already, having started back in June. As Gayle (editor) mentions in her column, we're interested in folks who'd like to help us review the numerous titles that are showing up...though we're not paying, you do get free books out of the deal. And also that we're looking for folks to give us feedback on the reviews for (possible) inclusion in the letters to the editor and reviews.

Again, thanks for the mention.

Ernest Lilley
Sr. Editor, Gumshoe
