I had always been a bookish girl, but during that year of illness, books became my refuge. They were the best way to escape from my bed, from the violent and embarrassing doings of my body. I felt especially drawn to Agatha Christie, and was inordinately fond of Miss Marple--I loved how this gentle, unassuming woman could use her keen observational skills to piece together clues, get out of jams, plumb human darkness, and still prepare a lovely afternoon tea.You can read Brandeis’ posting here.
