It’s all in Swedish, so don’t expect to glean much more than atmosphere from the trailer for the 13th Inspector Kurt Wallander film, The Secret (or Hemligheten). Nonetheless, that atmosphere is quite captivating, and will be of special interest to people who have read Henning Mankell’s Wallander novels. The clip stars Swedish actor Krister Henriksson. The Secret, due in theaters on November 10, is the final installment of a popular big-screen series based on the character of Wallander, but not adapted from Mankell’s books.
Although it would be terrific, it’s unlikely that these yarns will ever be shown in the States or Britain (with subtitles, of course). However, as The Rap Sheet has previously reported, negotiations are currently underway in the UK to make an English-language TV series from the Wallander mysteries. And BBC Scotland, together with Wallander’s movie company, Yellow Bird, has reportedly begun filming a two-part miniseries based on The Return of the Dancing Master (2000), a standalone featuring Detective Stefan Lindman.

Your lament that these stories will likely never be shown in the U.S. or the U.K. reminded me of Donald Westlake's lament for the increasing parochialism and insularity of American culture. Years ago, he said, he could get "a post-graduate course in comedy" from watching Big Deal on Madonna Street. But now, he wonders, what will happen to a generation of Americans that grows up whose idea of a good time is Spider Man?
