Janet Rudolph, editor of Mystery Readers Journal, has announced the inception of a new Macavity Award that will be given annually for the best historical mystery. Contenders for this prize will be nominated and voted on by the members of Mystery Readers International, with winners being announced each year at Bouchercon, the largest and oldest convention dedicated entirely to mystery fiction.
The Sue Feder Macavity Award for Historical Fiction honors the memory of Sue Feder, who passed away on September 9, 2005. Feder was a “reviewer, scholar, and dedicated mystery fan,” according to an announcement made by Rudolph. Feder founded the Historical Mystery Appreciation Society and “did so much to perpetuate and support historical mysteries. Mystery Readers International is so pleased to honor her contribution, dedication and memory through this award.”

Sue Feder was especially known for her wholehearted and full-throated support of Ellis Peters (aka Edith Pargeter). She is sorely missed in the mystery community, and this move by _Mystery Readers Journal_ to name a historical Macavity Award after her is fitting indeed.
