High Stakes at Harrogate

There are half a dozen works shortlisted for the 2023 Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year award, organized by Harrogate International Festivals. Readers are now encouraged to vote online for their favorite among them.

The Botanist, by M.W. Craven (Constable)
Into the Dark, by Fiona Cummins (Macmillan)
The Locked Room, by Elly Griffiths (Quercus)
Black Hearts, by Doug Johnstone (Orenda)
Wrong Place Wrong Time, by Gillian McAllister (Michael Joseph)
The It Girl, by Ruth Ware (Simon & Schuster)

“The prestigious award—now in its 19th year—celebrates crime fiction at its very best,” reads a press release distributed yesterday, “with this year’s shortlist taking readers on spine-tingling journeys of murder, stalking, ghosts, mysterious disappearances and much more. … [T]he list features newcomers and previous prize contenders alike—but none of this year’s shortlisted novelists have ever taken home the coveted award before, making this year’s competition even more tense.” This year’s six finalists were winnowed down from a longlist of 20 choices announced in April.

Again, click over here to register your preference. The winner will be declared on Thursday, July 20, which is the opening night of this year’s Theakston Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival, being held in Harrogate, England.
