Imagining a daughter for Sherlock Holmes isn’t exactly a unique idea. South Carolina author Leonard Goldberg has been writing novels about Joanna Blalock, the great sleuth’s daughter, and her companion Dr. John Watson Jr. ever since 2018’s appropriately titled The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes. That series currently comprises seven books.
But now America’s CW TV network has ordered Sherlock & Daughter, an eight-part mystery/thriller drama starring British actor David Thewlis (Harry Potter, Fargo) as Arthur Conan Doyle’s brilliant protagonist. According to The Killing Times, this program will offer viewers an older Holmes, “less confident and out of his comfort zone. The renowned detective finds himself mysteriously unable to investigate a sinister case without risking the lives of his closest friends.” Meanwhile, it introduces us to a young American named Amelia (played by Blu Hunt), who—following her mother’s unexplained murder—learns that her missing father may be Sherlock Holmes.

“Sherlock battles between his intellect and his emotion when he is confronted with this young woman claiming to be his daughter,” The Killing Times explains. “Despite wildly different backgrounds and attitudes, Amelia proves herself essential to cracking the case as the pair work together to solve a global conspiracy [and] the mystery of her mother’s murder, and find out for sure if she really is Sherlock’s daughter.” Dougray Scott (Batwoman) has been cast as Holmes’ nemesis, Professor Moriarty, in this forthcoming series.
“Of course, given the show’s synopsis,” writes Screen Rant’s T.C. Phillips, “it is possible that Amelia may not end up being Sherlock’s child at all, but to even consider it a likelihood marks a notable departure from the character’s true origins. Nonetheless, Sherlock & Daughter could potentially be looking to establish [a] unique take on the character and present a Sherlock vastly different to those viewers have met previously.” I can’t tell, reading information about this project online, whether the show is going to be a period piece, or set in modern times. We’ll just have to wait to hear more.
