November 11 is officially designated as Veterans Day here in the United States. But because that date happens to be a Saturday this year, federal employees and many businesses are expected to observe the holiday one day early—tomorrow, Friday.
For some of us, then, that means extra free time to retreat into a good book. If you wish is to read stories that incorporate this annual holiday, or that deal with former members of the military, take a peek at Janet Rudolph’s updated catalogue of Veterans Day-appropriate mysteries. They include everything from Rennie Airth’s wonderful River of Darkness and Malla Nunn’s A Beautiful Place to Die to Devil in a Blue Dress, by Walter Mosley; Mr. Churchill's Secretary, by Susan Elia MacNeal; and Philip Kerr’s early Bernie Gunther novels.
