Craven Picks Up Peculier Prize

Word reaches us this morning that M.W. Craven has scored the 2023 Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year award for his book The Botanist (Constable). His fellow British author Elly Griffiths (aka Domenica de Rosa) has, meanwhile, seen her novel The Locked Room (Quercus) “Hightly Commended” in that same competition.

Other finalists for this year’s Old Peculier prize were Into the Dark, by Fiona Cummins (Macmillan); Black Hearts, by Doug Johnstone (Orenda); Wrong Place Wrong Time, by Gillian McAllister (Michael Joseph); and The It Girl, by Ruth Ware (Simon & Schuster).

In addition to Craven’s win, Ann Cleeves received the 2023 Theakston Old Peculier Outstanding Contribution Award for her almost four-decades-long mystery-writing career.

More information and photos can be found at the Web site of Harrogate International Festivals, which runs this annual contest.

Thanks for your good wishes, Jeff, re the Jury Box column. I, too, admired the talent of Tony Bennett. Read this interesting WaPo article about how a WWII incident made Bennett into a committed civil rights activist. https://wapo.st/43Et0RR
