Don’t Know Tough, by Arkansas high school football coach and newspaper columnist Eli Cranor, has won this year’s first-ever Peter Lovesey First Crime Novel Contest. That announcement was included yesterday in a delightful video celebration of Lovesey’s Golden Anniversary as a mystery writer, hosted by McKenna Jordan of Houston, Texas’ Murder by the Book, with guest appearances by Jeffery Deaver, Liza Cody, Lawrence Block, Peter Robinson, and others.
According to a news release, Don't Know Tough is “about a high school football player with an explosively troubled home life, the idealistic coach who thinks he can save him, and the murder that threatens to tear their Arkansas town apart on the eve of the playoffs.” Cranor’s winning manuscript was chosen from among 200 contest entries. It will be published by Soho Crime in the spring of 2022.
