What If ...

It was 54 years ago today that rising young American actor James Dean (Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden, Giant, etc.) was killed in a car crash while driving his Porsche 550 Spyder near Cholame, California. But who might Dean have become, and what might he have done, had he lived to see more than his 24 years? A minute-long advertisement from South Africa imagines the possibilities.

I can't decide if it's heartbreaking or unfair. To take someone's life and extend it based on your own beliefs and assumptions seems, well, presumptuous. And to do so for the sake of making money is very 'worldly' - as opposed to the softly-shot artistic piece presented here. I am not saying the death of this young talent wasn't tragic. I love cinema as it was. But as it was is as it should be.

54 years ago. That's powerful, in a wistful way.
