Past Their Prime (Time)

In its rundown of the 40 “best TV shows of the 1980s,” AOL hits many of the high points, including China Beach (at number 17), M*A*S*H (7), St. Elsewhere (6), Thirtysomething (4), and Cheers (1). It also features a wide variety of crime, mystery, and legal dramas:

21 Jump Street (38)
Matlock (37)
Scarecrow and Mrs. King (35)
Spenser: For Hire (30)
Remington Steele (29)
Murder, She Wrote (27)
In the Heat of the Night (24)
Miami Vice (20)
Cagney & Lacey (15)
Magnum, P.I. (14)
L.A. Law (8)
Moonlighting (3)
Hill Street Blues (2)

But what about Crime Story, the 1986-1988 period cop series starring Dennis Farina? How about The Equalizer (1985-1989), which put Edward Woodward into the role of a smooth-talking, fashionably dressed urban vigilante? And were Fraggle Rock and The Golden Girls really better shows than Miami Vice and Spenser: For Hire?

Let the debate begin!

The Equalizer just came up in a conversation with another blogger yesterday.

What are you gonna do? AOL never tries to put together a 'class' list, just a popular one. Otherwise both Equalizer and Crime Story would both be on the list. Shoot, Crime Story should be on there just for the Del Shannon song alone!

As much as I love the mystery shows, MASH has always been #1 to me. Best show I ever saw in 50 years of watching TV.
