Richard Helms’ The Mojito Coast, I write in my critique of that
new novel for Kirkus Reviews, “is something of a throwback, but in the best
sense. Its list of debts extends at least to Mickey Spillane, Brett Halliday,
and that renowned Humphrey Bogart picture, Casablanca.” Set in Cuba at the time
of that country’s fall to revolutionary forces led by Fidel Castro, Mojito finds Miami-based
private investigator Cormac Loame following the twisted trail of an overripe
14-year-old girl who has slipped the clutches of her father, a former heavyweight boxer now grown wealthy from laundering money for Florida
mob boss Santo Trafficante Jr. You can read my full review here.
