Although he isn’t thought of as a crime writer, Mississippi’s Larry Brown, who died at age 53 in 2004, demonstrated--in a body of work that stretched from his first novel, Dirty Work (1989), to his last, the posthumously published A Miracle of Catfish--an uncommon depth of understanding about people prone to violence and beset by the rigors of hardship.
