Words Fail Me, But Not Them

In his recent assessment of mystery fiction magazines, Otto Penzler remarked comparatively little on Mystery Scene. But I have to say, I’m continually impressed with that publication’s efforts. The newest, Winter 2007-2008 issue demonstrates both he taste and energies of its editor, Kate Stine. We find in these pages profiles of Minette Walters (The Chameleon’s Shadow), Joan Druett (Deadly Shoals), and Cornelia Read (The Crazy School), along with a retrospective on the 1982-1988 TV series Cagney & Lacey, a tribute to--of all characters--Scooby-Doo, and Jon L. Breen’s fond look back at the work of William Campbell Gault (Don’t Cry for Me, County Kill, etc.) Well worth picking up.

Yes, I thought it was a bit odd and offhand - "oh, and the longest running magazine is Mystery Scene." He seems to have been offended by some indication on their website that you could buy it at B&N. Not sure if it was in response to that comment, but the website now has a nice regionally-arranged list of the indie stores that carry it. (I hadn't really thought about it since I get mine by subscription.)

Full disclosure: I review for MS and have written a couple of articles for them.

Barbara,

In fact the list of independent mystery booksellers who carry Mystery Scene has been there since Day 1 of the web site.

We have always supported independent booksellers, especially those who support Mystery Scene.

Full disclosure: I run the Mystery Scene website.
