As a young black youth the book kept me engaged into school because I wanted to hear more of the story and I had to hear the end of the story. He captured my soul and I bacame an avid reader and Durango Street was my start. It also aided in my fandom of the USC Trijan running backs of the day. I read it back when I was 11 or 12 back in the mid-70s, and was certainly one of those young white readers whose understanding of the US and racial issues in general was heavily informed by this novel.
