I apparently missed spotting
Booklist’s picks of 2011’s “
Top 10 Crime Fiction for Youth.” (And shouldn’t that read “Top 10 Crime Novels for Youths”? Someone, I think, needs a copy editor.) But fortunately, Lynette Wong of the Omnivoracious blog
turned me on to it. I don’t read young-adult fiction anymore, but as a boy, I probably would have enjoyed hearing about works such as these.
No sounds fine to me. Think they're using it as the generic term for young people rather than the plural noun.
